ABOUT
Anushay Sheikh is a multidisciplinary artist working across film, photography, and installation. Rooted in process-based and anti-oppressive practices, their work explores vulnerability as a form of resistance, centering the intersections of queerness, faith, and race. They hold a BA with Distinction in Economics and Political Science from McGill University and an MFA in Documentary Media from Toronto Metropolitan University, where they received the Dean’s Award of Excellence and the TMU Gold Medal, the University’s highest honour.
Their narrative short Same Time Next Year premiered at the Reel Asian International Film Festival, receiving the DGC Ontario Award and the WIFT+ Toronto Award, tracing the tenderness and fracture of a relationship over time. Their installation The Test, presented at The Image Centre, gathered the mental health testimonies of eight queer Muslims within a majlis setting, transforming a traditional site of gathering into one of collective witnessing. Their documentary Reclamation follows a young trans man tattooing around his top surgery scars, framing the body as a site of authorship and gender affirmation.
Alongside their independent practice, Anushay has collaborated with YouTube Canada, Google Canada, HXOUSE, Harry Rosen, the Canada Council for the Arts, and CBC, bringing the same care-driven, community-rooted approach to commissioned storytelling.
